Training and Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the best way to grow your business.

In February 2009 the Government announced it was to create around 21,000 public sector apprenticeships in hospitals, schools, colleges and town halls across England in 2009-10. K&M McLoughlin identified the need for the expansion of the qualification and has been heavily involved with the CITB since 1998

For the last 10 years K&M have operated with 10% of our workforce being apprentices. We intend to continually support these aims and have committed to achieving an increase of this amount to 15% of our workforce by the end of 2009. We have recently taken on 15 apprentices from local neighbouring boroughs on a 10 week trial period. We expect that at least 13 of these will pass the trial period.

The move to increase the amount of Apprenticeships offered will have significant benefits for everyone within the company and enable us to drive improvements at a time when the Government is looking to expand Apprenticeship take up across all sectors.

Apprenticeships combine college learning with on-site experience to ensure workers have the right balance of technical skills and practical experience, which means that you end up with a well rounded, qualified and competent worker.

“The industry is now so much more diverse than it used to be and learning aspects of different disciplines within an Apprenticeship offers employees a more appropriate foundation to meet today’s current employment needs. Furthermore it offers employers a credible skill set with increased retention and progression opportunities.”

Training

Building a business requires the right skills at every level, technologies, processes and contractual relationships shift all the time and you need to keep up with new ways of working to stay ahead of the game.

This means taking time to review the skills and strengths of our team and thinking about the skills that will be needed in future. Our commitment to training ensures we always have access to a range of products that can help. Working with the CITB we submit a yearly training plan which ensures that all aspects of development are covered.

This investment in training and employing tradesmen is rewarded in repeat business an expanding client base and a team that knows how each member of the squad operates. A demonstration of this is our achievement of ‘Investors in People’.

We continually assess and train our Management and Operatives, as well as undertaking approved applicator courses. We constantly upgrade our training with new products on the market, i.e. spray applications, floor paints, wall coverings, etc, along with upgrading all of our employee’s basic skills.

We have 3 Management members qualified in Personal Profiling Analysis, this is a business assessment tool which gives us the means to motivate, stimulate and encourage people in our organisation by raising people's self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence. Assessment, testing and development play a vital part in not only recruiting but also retaining key people in your business.
